Rappler
Rappler is an online news organisation based in Pasig, Metro Manila, Philippines. The independent news provider was founded in 2011 by Nobel peace prize winner of 2021, Maria Ressa, and a team of fellow journalists. Rappler aims to empower truth by countering disinformation through investigative journalism and research.
Rappler’s strength lies in in-depth investigations of highly sensitive topics such as corruption, discrimination, and state violence. Many of their investigative stories are actively countering state-driven disinformation campaigns and therefore give a voice to suppressed and marginalised groups of people in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.
Rappler’s exceptional courage in the face of emerging autocracy and erosion of democracy has led to significant pressure on the organisation by the administration of former president Rodrigo Duterte. Being confronted with numerous lawsuits throughout 2018 to 2024, the government’s attempts to suppress independent journalistic work by intimidation proved unsuccessful and Rappler’s team managed to withstand pressure to continue its work of holding people in power accountable.
Their courage and resistance against state repressions in the name of independent journalism in the Philippines makes Rappler’s work an international role model in fighting for press freedom and protecting democratic institutions.
Rappler is part of the Poynter Institute’s International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) and is an official Facebook fact-checking partner. The organisation was initially funded by the team itself as wells as two Philippine tech companies. Today, the Rappler Holdings Corporation provides funding to the Rappler news agency.
