CORRECTIV is an independent, non-profit, Germany-based newsroom that focuses on investigative journalism. Founded by journalist David Schraven in 2014, it aims at strengthening an open and democratic civil society by exposing systematic abuse and holding people in power accountable.

Since its inception, CORRECTIV has published some of the most striking investigative pieces of recent years. Notably, it played a significant role in uncovering crucial details surrounding the case of ‘Flight MH17’, which tragically crashed over Ukrainian territory. Moreover, CORRECTIV exposed a significant donation scandal involving Germany’s far-right party AfD, alongside revealing a notorious ‘secret meeting’ of right-wing extremists in Potsdam, where they plotted the large-scale displacement of people from Germany in January 2024. These impactful investigations, upon publication, ignited contentious debates, heightened public awareness regarding threats to democracy posed by extreme-right actors, and ultimately enriched democratic dialogue. The numerous awards that CORRECTIV received reflect its profound contributions to informing the German public about the scheming of anti-democratic entities and the abuse of power. As a result, CORRECTIV is the target of smear campaigns and lawsuits from far-right communities on a regular basis.

CORRECTIV also maintains CORRECTIV.Faktencheck, which is part of the independent and commercial subsidiary CORRECTIV Verlag und Vertriebs UG that is focusing on fact-checking, investigations into mis- and disinformation and the publishing of books since 2017, maintaining, amongst others, a “Disinformation Hotline” that allows you to hand in requests for fact-checking via WhatsApp. CORRECTIV also employs a wide array of journalistic projects that aim to educate and engage readers as well as strengthening civil society through media literacy. One of such projects is “Faktenforum”, a media literacy initiative that aims to turn citizens into volunteer fact-checkers. Since 2017, CORRECTIV is actively training journalists in its own journalism school named “Reporterfabrik”; in 2019 a citizens’ academy for media literacy (“Bürgerakademie für Medienkompetenz”) was added to the portfolio to support the inclusion of media literacy projects for the German public.

CORRECTIV is funded through donations from individuals, grants from foundations, public funds as well as income from the commercial subsidiary CORRECTIV Verlag und Vertriebs UG.
