Africa Check
Africa Check was the first independent fact-checking organisation on the African continent. Founded in 2012 and headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, Africa Check holds public figures accountable for their statements and effectively and continuously debunks false information of public relevance.
Since establishing its francophone office in Senegal in 2015, the non-profit organisation has undergone rapid growth, currently employing approximately 50 staff members across the continent. Africa Check consistently works to expand the organisation’s reach, serving as a prime example of effective practices for other initiatives seeking to establish sustainable fact-checking organisations that make a genuine impact.
Africa Check’s success stems from its ability to cultivate one of the most robust networks of fact-checkers on the continent through initiatives such as the Africa Facts Network. Furthermore, it conducts extensive training for fact-checkers across Africa and recognises outstanding journalists and fact-checkers through the African Fact Checking Awards.
Notably, Africa Check has also addressed a common challenge faced by fact-checking organisations: financial sustainability. As a pioneer in global fact-checking, Africa Check continues to play a crucial role in promoting accuracy and accountability in public discourse.
With an annual budget of approximately 2 million EUR (40,000,000 Rand), Africa Check secures funding from a variety of sources, including donations, project funding from NGOs, and revenue generated by its research and information subsidiary, TRi Facts.
